Why Content Marketing Certifications Are Helpful

In this section, I’ll talk about some reasons to get certified in content marketing.

Reason 1: You Learn In Structured Way

I still remember the time when I started learning about content marketing, and I was REALLY lost. 

And what I did to learn more about this stuff? I Googled. Nothin special!

I typed the term “What is content marketing” and read almost every search result. 

I was overwhelmed by new terms like “keyword research”, “buyer persona”, “call-to-action”, “conversion rate”, and dozens more. I never heard these terms before.

And it took me a LOT of time to figure things out. I read a billion blog posts and ebooks.

But content marketing courses and certifications allow you to learn things in a more structured way.

You don’t have to sit for hours and read a billion articles (Like Me).

Just take a course, starts with a lesson, take notes, and move onto the next lesson.

No more wondering and guesswork. Just follow the course and you’re all set.

Learning in a structured way is a PLUS point of a content marketing course. It saves your time and you learn faster (without reading random blog posts and watching YouTube videos).

Reason 2: You Learn From an Expert

Second PLUS point of content marketing certification program is that you get a chance to learn from an expert who knows what they’re talking about.

This is a HUGE difference-maker.

For example, I used to spend a lot of time learning content marketing from online blog posts.

Sure, I learned some golden information from these blog posts and resources. But a lot of stuff was confusing for me and I didn’t know what to believe.

Today, I know what advice is legit and what isn’t. 

But when you enroll in a course taught by an industry expert, you completely remove this issue. 

Reason 3: Show Off Your Skills

Many people get certifications so they can put “Content Marketing Certified” into their LinkedIn profiles or resumes.

Certification is the quickest way to tell people that you learned content marketing from a program and you know what you’re doing.

In this section, I’ll talk about some reasons why content marketing course may not be a great fit for you.

Reason 1: Only Learning. Less Practice.

A content marketing training program is a great way to LEARN.

It’s good news, right?

But here’s the bad news?

The most certification courses don’t allow you to implement your learnings into practice.

It’s like watching football videos and learning all the techniques to do a goal. But there’s no actual grassy field and goalpost.

It’s one thing to learn about writing content. But sending out outreach emails to bloggers and influencers and make connections – That’s a whole different story.

My advice is: Follow the program that encourages active practice over passive learning.

Reason 2: Certifications Are Not Universally Respected

Let’s do real talk:

A lot of hiring managers and companies don’t give a shit about certifications.

Let’s check out this job posting for a content marketing manager.

Do you see them asking for a content marketing certification anywhere?

Negative!

And I have gone through almost 50 content marketing job posting and the story is the same.

People care about real-world experience. Not a certification.

Sure a certification is not going to hurt you, but it’s not something business owners care about.

Let’s say you’re a freelancer, what do you think a potential client would care about most:

Your “content marketing certification” from a random course OR the fact that your content strategy generated leads for one of your other clients.

The later one, I thought so???

Reason 3: Certification Doesn’t Mean You Have Great Skills

Wondering why don’t hiring managers and your clients value certifications?

The answer is simple: Certifications doesn’t mean you have real-world skills.

Let’s say you just completed a lesson about keyword research for content.

But does that mean, you can take a brand new website or blog, use keyword tools to find relevant keywords for a particular business, and create a conversion-centric content around these keywords?

Probably not!

You need practice and real-world experience to get that level!

Your Goal: Learning + Practice

If you want to learn content marketing, your goal should be (and the only way):

Learning + Practice = Content Marketing Pro

The key is: Take a structured content marketing certification but practice that education on your own website or blog.

  2. Instead of certification it’s better to practice the content marketing strategies yourself by creating your own blog or site.

    I found it useful and recently I got the job in great company just by showing my skills instead of bragging about myself and just showcasing the certification.
